Benzo withdrawal doesn’t only affect the brain. For many people, the stomach becomes one of the hardest parts of the process. “Benzo belly” is the name often used for bloating, nausea, constipation, stomach pain, and digestive upset that show up after reducing or stopping benzodiazepines. Research published in PubMed Central shows that in benzodiazepine withdrawal, patients with probable withdrawal syndrome had significantly higher frequencies of diarrhea (45% vs 6% in those without withdrawal), with symptoms including gastrointestinal system dysfunction alongside nervous system activation.
Benzo belly is usually a temporary response as the nervous system and gut adjust after long-term benzo use. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s also common. With the right support, symptoms usually ease as the body stabilizes.
